Astana, May 29: The leaders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus met in Astana to sign the agreement establishing the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). The union, first proposed by President Nazarbayev over 20 years ago, builds on the work of the Customs Union (CU) and Common Economic Space (CES) to create a common market of over 170 million people.
NEW AGREEMENT BETWEEN EBRD, KAZAKHSTAN WILL SEE EBRD, OTHER INSTITUTIONS DIRECT $2.7 BILLION INTO ECONOMY
Astana, May 27: The government of Kazakhstan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an agreement to engage the EBRD and other international financial institutions to direct $2.7 billion from the Kazakh government into priority sectors of the country’s economy. The new Partnership for Re-Energising the Reform Process in Kazakhstan is intended to boost investment and support ongoing reform in the country and was signed on May 23 at this year’s Astana Economic Forum by Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov and EBRD Managing Director Olivier Descamps.
EURASIAN ECONOMIC UNION SOON TO BE A REALITY
Astana, May 20: Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus plan to adopt a treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union this month and will work together to build a new structure, while at the same maintaining their status as independent states on Central Asia.

Kazakhstan’s grain exports are still heading to traditional markets, but efforts are underway to reach new markets in China and Southeast Asia and to modernise grain holding and transport technologies to make the industry more profitable.

Astana, March 11: Kazakhstan’s government plans to issue a sovereign Eurobond this year, after putting off a plan to raise $1 billion last year. The bond would be Astana’s first entry onto international markets for 13 years. Minister of Finance Bakhyt Sultanov said the bond will be issued this year, according to a Feb. 28 statement published on the financeministry’s website.

At that time the city was called Akmola. but in 1998 it was re-named Astana (meaning, “capital”), and it is from this moment that the anniversary is taken. Astana, June 21: An inaugural meeting took place this week in Astana of the working group on the protection of foreign investors’ rights in Kazakhstan. Otherwise known as “the investors’ ombudsman”, the group is the responsibility of the National Agency for Exports and Investment, Kaznex Invest. Kaznex Invest comes under the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, and the Minister, Asset Issekeshev, who is also a Deputy Prime Minister, chairs the group.

Astana, June 7: Peugeot cars to start production in Kazakhstan. A three-way agreement between Peugeot Citroen, AgromashHolding and the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of Kazakhstan means that Peugeot cars will start production in Kostanay, in northern Kazakhstan, as early as July this year. Initially, the Peugeot 301, the Peugeot 3008, the Peugeot 508 and the Peugeot Partner will be produced, at a rate of 4,000 cars per year. This can be expected to increase to 10,000 per year.
VI ASTANA ECONOMIC FORUM TAKES PLACE
Astana, May 26: The VI Astana Economic Forum took place this week under the title “Ensuring Balanced Economic Growth within the G-Global Format”. This is an indication of the strength which the G-Global online platform has achieved since it was set up by President Nazarbayev in December 2011. Another first for the Forum was that the World Anti-Crisis Conference, another initiative of President Nazarbayev, ran alongside the Forum. This ensured that many of the world’s leading experts in a variety of fields were among the 10,000 delegates who came to Astana.

It was created by President Nazarbayev on March 1 1995 to bring together in harmony and mutual understanding the different ethnic, religious, social and cultural groups which exist in Kazakhstan. A session is held at least once a year.

Astana, April 12: The future of education and science in Kazakhstan was high on the agenda this week, as the country marked “Scientists’ Day” on April 12. KAZAKHSTAN HOSTS IRAN NUCLEAR TALKS
Astana, April 5: For the second time in six weeks, Almaty has hosted the continuing talks on the future of Iran’s nuclear program. The very fact that this round of talks followed on so swiftly from the previous round, held in Almaty on February 26-27, is a positive sign. The first three rounds of talks, held between April and June 2012 in Istanbul, Baghdad and Moscow, ended in stalemate. It was regarded as a frustrating, and, indeed, worrying sign by the international community that it took eight months to get everyone round the table again.

Astana, March 22: E-government and healthcare were on the government’s agenda at its March 19 meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister,Serik Akhmetov. “E-government” – accessing government services and making payments on the internet – is the way of the future. The Minister of Transport and Communication, Askar Zhumagaliev, the Minister of Education and Science,Bakytzhan Zhumagulov, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Kalmukhanbet Kassymov, addressed the meeting on the state program, “Information Kazakhstan-2020”.

Astana, July 9: Kazakhstan’s capital celebrated its 14th anniversary on July 6.
The Kazakh capital has progressed greatly since the Parliament agreed to President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s proposal to move the capital in 1994 and today belongs to one of the most unique cities in the world. Astana, June 1: The 4th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions entitled “Peace and Accord as a Choice of Mankind” took place in Astana on May 30-31 under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The Congress brought together Muslims and Christians, Jews and Buddhists, as well as representatives of Hinduism, Shintoism, and Zoroastrianism.

SENATE ELECTIONS FILL ONE THIRD OF SEATS IN THE UPPER HOUSE
Astana, August 19: Kazakhstan’s 2011 Senate elections were held today on August 19 with 16 of the 47 seats in the upper house of Parliament being contested. Preliminary figures indicate that the overall turnout of voters reached 96.6% (the Kazakh Senate is elected by deputies of maslikhats - local councils). In the election race 39 registered deputy nominees ran for a seat in Senate. Following the elections Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Kuandyk Turgankulov briefed on the first results of the electors’ voting.
7.1 % GROWTH ANNOUNCED FOR KAZAKHSTAN'S ECONOMY IN FIRST HALF OF 2011
Astana, August 8: At the enlarged meeting of the Government in late July, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade Kairat Kelimbetov summarised the results of the first half of 2011 and set priorities for an economic development for the remaining six months of the year. Accordingto Kelimbetov, domestic economy demonstrated a positive growth at a rate of 7.1 percent. The growth in the economy resulted from the increasing in industrial production by 5.8 percent, in the volume of construction work by 1.7 percent, in trade by 14.3 percent, and in transport services by 6.5 percent.
“High rate of growth was the result of implementation of Industrialisation Map project.” Kelimbetov commented.

Astana, February 15: The establishment of a national industrial complex, competitive in both domestic and overseas markets, is the top goal of the Kazakhstan’s national atomic company, Kazatomprom, the country’s operator for production, import and export of uranium, rare metals, nuclear fuel, power plants, special equipment and dual-purpose materials. According to the 2010 company report, production of uranium by all producers in Kazakhstan increased by almost 30 percent, where 17,803 tonnes of uranium have been extracted.

Astana, January 12: According to Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov, the preliminary results of 2010 are very optimistic and need to be sustained in future. “Overall, we all did a good job. According to the forecasts, the gross domestic product of our country increased by seven percent last year,” Massimov stated at the governmental session on January 11. Industry output has increased by 10 percent, construction by one percent, trade by 12 percent, transportation by 7.4 percent, communications by five percent.

WORLD BANK RANKS KAZAKHSTAN FASTEST IN IMPROVING BUSINESS REGULATIONS
Astana, November 6: Kazakhstan has improved business regulation the most among world’s economies in the past year, according to the eighth annual World Bank report, Doing Business 2011: Making a Difference for Entrepreneurs, released on November 4. Kazakhstan improved conditions for starting a business and refined construction, investor protection, and trade regulations. As a result, it moved up 15 places in the rankings on the ease of doing business, to 59 among 183 countries surveyed.

Astana, October 4: Formal preparations for the first OSCE Summit in 11 years began on September 30 with representatives from OSCE participating States gathering in Warsaw to review how countries are fulfilling the commitments they have undertaken as part of the Organization. Almaty, July 17: OSCE Foreign Ministers informal meeting in Almaty on July 16-17 reached consensus on holding a summit in Astana this year and reinforcing OSCE assistance to Kyrgyzstan, said the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakhstan’s Secretary of State and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev.

Almaty, May 18: On May 14 and 15 Kazakhstan’s southern capital of Almaty hosted the Second Trans-Asian Parliamentary Forum, “The OSCE Eurasian Dimension”. This forum is the first major event held in Kazakhstan under the country’s chairmanship in the OSCE, and it brought together members of parliament not only from OSCE member states but also from countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel and Qatar.

Semey, April 6: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a strong call for the world to make meaningful progress towards nuclear disarmament today as he visited the former Soviet nuclear weapons test site in eastern Kazakhstan. “Kazakhstan has shown extraordinary leadership in nuclear disarmament. In 1991, President Nazarbayev made a courageous decision to shut down the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and renounce nuclear weapons. That was a visionary step… a true declaration of independence. ,” Ban Ki-moon said at visit the former test site where the Soviet Union conducted more than 450 nuclear tests with radiation affecting the lives of 1.5 million people in Kazakhstan. “I urge leaders of all countries, especially nuclear weapon states, to follow Kazakhstan’s example. For inspiration they should look to Kazakhstan’s example,” he added.

KAZAKHSTAN TO SPEND $50 MILLION EDUCATING AFGHANS
Astana, November 24: Kazakhstan will spend 50 million dollars over the next five years to educate 1,000 Afghans under an agreement between the two countries signed on November 22 in Kabul. Kanat Saudabayev, Kazakhstan’s Secretary of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Afghanistan to sign the agreement with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Spanta. Mr Saudabayev also met President Hamid Karzai and the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Kai Eide.

Astana, November 10: Yesterday, an international Forum dedicated to humanitarian norms and current global challenges opened in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Astana, October 14: Kazakhstan has joined the club of countries with a High Human Development Index (HDI) says a report published by the United Nations Development Programme on October 5th.With an HDI of 0,804, Kazakhstan is placed 82nd out of the 182 countries ranked. Kazakhstan’s HDI grew steadily during the last 14 years at an average of 0.2% per annum.
KAZAKHSTAN: RECORD GRAIN HARVEST
Astana, October 13: Kazakhstan has reported a record grain harvest this year. 22 million tons were collected – making 2009 the second best harvest in the last five years (in 2007, 22.3 million tons of grain were collected). This year also saw the planted area under grain crops in Kazakhstan increase to 17.2 million hectares (14.7 million hectares under wheat) - 1 million hectares more than last year.
